Sidewalks, Curbs and Accessible Crossings
Safe, accessible walking routes, built to the AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards.
Sidewalks, Curbs and Accessible Crossings in Toronto and across Ontario
Sidewalks and curbs are used by everyone, every day, in every season. They need to drain, resist salt and frost, and give people who use wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and white canes a safe, predictable route.
We build and replace concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, curb ramps and depressed curbs with tactile walking surface indicators, multi-use paths and boulevard restoration. Work meets the owner's specifications and the AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards where they apply, with pedestrian detours maintained throughout.
Harborline Sterling Construction Inc. is principal-led. One of our co-founders, Mansoor Alam Khan or Maqsood Mohammed, oversees every project, so decisions get made quickly and you always know who is accountable.

Read articleFrequently asked questions
What are tactile walking surface indicators?
They are textured surfaces, usually raised domes, placed at curb ramps and similar edges so people who are blind or have low vision can detect where the walkway meets the road. The AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards require them at curb ramps and depressed curbs.
Who do the AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards apply to?
They apply to the Ontario government, public sector organizations and many private and non-profit organizations when they build new or redevelop public spaces such as exterior paths, parking, play spaces and trails. Requirements vary by organization type and size.
How do you keep pedestrians safe during sidewalk work?
We plan pedestrian detours and protected routes before starting, keep accessible routes open wherever possible, and follow Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 for work next to traffic.
Do you build private sidewalks and walkways?
Yes. We build walkways, curbs and accessible routes for plazas, offices, schools, places of worship and condominiums.
How soon can a new sidewalk be used?
Pedestrians can usually use new sidewalks within days, but concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks. We protect it while it cures, especially in hot or cold weather.
