Building in Hamilton: what to know

Permits and approvals

The City of Hamilton's Building Division issues building permits across the whole city, including Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough and Glanbrook. Work near watercourses and the escarpment is reviewed by the Hamilton Conservation Authority, or another conservation authority depending on location, and sites in the Niagara Escarpment Plan area may also need a development permit from the Niagara Escarpment Commission.

Site conditions and logistics

Many Hamilton homes and commercial buildings are a century old, so renovations often uncover old wiring, plumbing and masonry that need attention. Building on or below the escarpment adds grading, drainage and access considerations.

Ontario Building Code

The 2024 Ontario Building Code took effect on January 1, 2025. We work with your designers to make sure drawings, barrier-free design and life-safety systems meet the current Code.

Winter construction

Frost, cold-weather concrete, temporary heat and shorter days affect cost and schedule. We plan for the season from the start, so winter never becomes a surprise.
