Building in Durham Region: what to know
Permits and approvals
Each municipality issues its own building permits, including the City of Pickering, the Town of Ajax, the Town of Whitby, the City of Oshawa and the Municipality of Clarington. Durham Region controls regional roads and much of the water and wastewater system. Conservation authority review may apply near the region's creeks and the Lake Ontario shoreline.
Site conditions and logistics
Greenfield sites in growth areas such as Seaton in north Pickering bring new servicing and site plan work, while established downtowns and plazas need renovation and modernization.
Ontario Building Code
The 2024 Ontario Building Code took effect on January 1, 2025. We work with your designers to make sure drawings, barrier-free design and life-safety systems meet the current Code.
Winter construction
Frost, cold-weather concrete, temporary heat and shorter days affect cost and schedule. We plan for the season from the start, so winter never becomes a surprise.
